Celtic Cross
Ten cards, six in a cross and four in a staff beside it. The Celtic Cross is the most detailed spread in common use and the easiest to drown in. Use it when a situation genuinely has many moving parts, and resist reading every card in isolation — the pattern matters more than any single position.
The heart of the matter
What the question is actually about, which is frequently not what you asked.
What crosses it
The obstacle or the counterforce. Read this one with card 1 as a pair, not separately.
The root
What is underneath — the older cause, often unconscious.
The recent past
What is leaving the situation, or what just happened to set this in motion.
What you believe
Your conscious aim or your stated hope. Sometimes the gap between this and card 3 is the whole reading.
What comes next
The near future — weeks rather than years.
You in it
How you are actually behaving, as opposed to how you would describe yourself.
The environment
Other people, circumstances, the pressures around the situation.
Hopes and fears
One position holding both, because in practice they are usually the same card.
Where it lands
The outcome on the current trajectory — conditional, not fixed.
How to deal it
Lay card 1, then card 2 across it. Card 3 below, 4 to the left, 5 above, 6 to the right — that completes the cross. Cards 7 to 10 go in a column to the right, bottom to top.
