The Devil

Major Arcana · XV · attachment · dependency · the trap you chose

Upright meaning

The figures on this card wear chains they could lift off. The Devil is bondage you participate in — habits, dependencies, relationships that cost more than they give and continue anyway. The card is less about evil than about honesty regarding what holds you.

The Devil reversed

The recognition, and often the beginning of release. Reversed, this card is usually good news: the chain has been noticed.

In love

Obsession, dependency, or a connection powered by intensity rather than compatibility. Sometimes simply strong physical attraction with nothing structural under it.

In career and money

A job kept for the money while it drains everything else. Contracts that bind more than they should. Golden handcuffs are still handcuffs.

Yes or no?

No. Drawn in answer to a direct question, this card advises against it — or says not yet. Want it read against your actual situation rather than in general? Pull a card here.
